BETHLEHEM, Pa. – In need of a big performance in the
second game of Saturday's doubleheader at Gillespie Field,
the University of Scranton baseball team got just that from
sophomore right-hander Matt Calamoneri (Hillsborough,
N.J./Hillsborough).
Calamoneri tossed a four-hit complete game to lift the Royals to
a 2-1 victory in the second game after they dropped the opener,
5-1. Calmoneri walked just two and struck out four while lifting
Scranton to 18-11 overall and 7-4 in the Landmark
Conference.
In the second game, the Royals jumped ahead with a run in the
top of the first on an RBI groundout by junior center fielder
Michael Gaeta (Cranford, N.J.).
Moravian (16-13, 7-7 Landmark) evened things up with a run in
the bottom of the second on a sacrifice fly by freshman second
baseman Alex Bull (Fair Haven, N.J./Rumson Fair Haven
Regional).
The game stayed tied into the fifth when Scranton broke through
on an RBI fielder's choice by freshman right fielder
Zach Dignam (Bridgewater, N.J./Immaculata)
that drove home junior designated hitter Eric
Pizzico (Royersford, Pa./Spring Ford), who had singled
to start the inning.
Calamoneri took it from there, getting a clutch double play to
end the Moravian half of the fifth, then stranding a one-out double
in the bottom of the seventh.
In the opener, the Royals fell behind 2-0 in the first and 4-0
after three innings. Senior designated hitter Greg
Monastra (West Chester, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) had
a two-out RBI double in the fourth to make it 4-1, but the
Greyhounds got that run right back in the bottom half of the inning
on a Scranton error.
Sophomore left fielder Michael Umerich (Clarks Summit, Pa./Abington
Heights) singled three times and junior third baseman
Mike Trabulsi (Malverne,
N.Y./Chaminade) had a pair of hits in the loss.
The teams will complete the Landmark Conference series on Sunday
when they play a single game starting at noon at Gillespie
Field.
