UPPER MONTCLAIR, NJ—In a span of five days, The University of Scranton field hockey team faced back-to-back nationally-ranked opponents. And for the second time, the Royals put up another solid effort before coming up a tad short.
Tonight, it was 12th-ranked Montclair St., which scored twice in the second half to pull away from a 1-1 halftime tie on its way to a 3-1 victory.
Kaitlyn Struss scored the game-winning goal in the 51st minute off a play set up by Meghan Weiss off of a penalty corner and Maura Johnston added an insurance goal five minutes later to help the Red Hawks improve to 12-3.
Scranton, now 10-4, took a 1-0 lead in the 27th minute of the first half when senior midfielder Alyssa Fania (Annandale, NJ/North Hunterdon) converted a penalty stroke for her 14th goal of the season. The Hawks tied it up moments later when Joelle Butrico converted a penalty stroke of her own.
Despite being out-shot 22-4, the Royals stayed in contention behind the play of senior Krista Mundy (North Caldwell, NJ/West Essex) and freshman Meghan Lee (Beachwood, NJ/Toms River South), each of whom split time evenly in goal and combined for 10 saves. Senior Bridget Brady (Plymouth Meeting, Pa./Mt. St. Joseph Academy) also turned away a Montclair St. scoring opportunity by recording a defensive save, her team-leading second of the season.
Tonight’s goal moves Fania into the team-lead in scoring with 14 goals and seven assists for 35 total points. With three regular-season games remaining, she is now five points shy of becoming one of only five players in Scranton history to score 100 points in a career. She now has 95 total points on 37 goals and 21 assists.
The Royals will return to Landmark action on Saturday, October 25, against Moravian College at 1:00 p.m. at Fitzpatrick Field. Prior to the start of the game, Fania and eight others will be honored as part of Senior Day festivities.
