LaPLUME, Pa. – The University of Scranton baseball team received home runs from senior outfielder Michael Gaeta (Cranford, N.J./Cranford) and sophomore outfielder Zach Dignam (Bridgewater, N.J./Immaculata) on Tuesday, but it wasn't enough as the Royals dropped a Landmark Conference game to Merchant Marine Academy, 14-5, at Christy Mathewson Field at Keystone College.
Merchant Marine Academy (12-7-1, 3-4 Landmark) scored five runs in the first and put the game away with four in the fourth and one in the sixth to build an 11-3 lead.
Scranton (7-8, 2-4 Landmark) chipped away at the early deficit, pulling within 6-3 on the solo home runs by Dignam and Gaeta, who finished with three hits, in the third before the Mariners pulled away.
The Royals also received two hits and two runs from senior designated hitter Eric Pizzico (Royersford, Pa./Spring-Ford). Juniors Nick Papillo (Germantown, Md./St. John's College H.S.) and Justin Klingman (Clarks Summit, Pa./Abington Heights) and senior Matt Maghini (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand) each added a hit and an RBI.
Scranton returns to action on Saturday, April 12, when it travels to Selinsgrove, Pa. for a Landmark Conference doubleheader against Susquehanna at 1 p.m.
