HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. — The University of Scranton men’s soccer team is getting downright stingy — especially when it comes to giving up goals.

The Royals posted their fourth shutout in five matches by turning back Centenary, 2-0, Saturday afternoon to improve to 4-1 on the year.

Junior Ryan Smith (Maple Glen, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) put Scranton ahead in the 39th minute off of a corner kick for his first goal of the season. The Royals sealed it late in the second half when sophomore Michael Bergen (Newtown, Pa./Pennington School) scored his first goal of the year off of a play set up by freshman Robbie Hartan (Hebron, Conn./RHAM).

Defensively, Scranton limited the Cyclones to five shot attempts, only two of which were on goal.  Overall, the Royals held a 15-5 advantage in shots.

Junior goalkeeper Jesse Coleman (Pittsburgh, Pa./Taylor Allderdice) finished with seven saves for Centenary, which lost its first match of the season and fell to 3-1-1.

In five matches, the Royals have outscored their opponents, 10-4.

Scranton returns to action this Tuesday, Sept. 16, against Misericordia University at Fitzpatrick Field beginning at 7 p.m.
