Senior center fielder Nick Papillo (Germantown, Md./St. John's College H.S.) drove in three runs and senior lefty C.J. Felthaus (Philadelphia, Pa./Father Judge) tossed three scoreless innings of relief as The University of Scranton baseball team won its home opener, 10-8, over Penn College on Thursday at Connell Park.
The Royals (10-11) scored four times in the first on the strength of Papillo's two-run single. But Penn College (4-9) fought back with four runs in the second and forged a 5-5 tie going into the fourth. That's when Scranton scored five times to take control, starting with Papillo's RBI single. Junior catcher Dominick Gulius (Laflin, Pa./Coughlin) delivered a two-run single, and freshman second baseman Brad Schneider (Ambler, Pa./LaSalle College H.S.) and sophomore shortstop Patrick O'Dell (Harleysville, Pa./St. Joseph's Prep) had RBI singles.
The Wildcats scored twice in the fifth and once in the sixth to trim Scranton's lead to 10-8, but Felthaus entered to start the seventh and slammed the door. He picked up the save by going the final three innings, allowing one hit and one walk while striking out three, including two in the final inning.
Papillo finished 2-for-3 with three RBIs and a run scored. O'Dell had a pair of hits, an RBI and a run, and freshman right fielder Chase Standen (Newtown Square, Pa./St. Joseph's Prep) went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.
Scranton will be back in action this weekend when it travels to Huntingdon, Pa. for a Landmark Conference series against Juniata. The doubleheader is scheduled for Saturday at 1 p.m. with Sunday's single game starting at noon.
