SELINSGROVE, Pa. - A successful penalty stroke by senior Jessica Pankey (Pompton Lakes, N.J./Pompton Lakes) in the 63rd minute lifted the University of Scranton field hockey team to a come-from-behind 2-1 win at Susquehanna on Saturday in Landmark Conference play.
With the win, Scranton remained unbeaten at 8-0 (1-0 in the Landmark), matching their best start in program history in the process. Susquehanna fell to 6-4 with the loss.
In the first half, Susquehanna got off to a fast start, scoring two minutes into the contest to take a 1-0 lead. With under two minutes left in the period, the Royals were able to finish off a penalty stroke after a foul in the box, as junior Elizabeth Yorey (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills) scored to tie the match up at 1-1 at intermission.
In the second half, both teams were able to get seven shots off, apiece, but the one by Pankey off another penalty stroke was the difference on the day. The goal, which was Pankey's third of the season, was also the second game-winner of the senior's career, as well.
Overall, Scranton outshot Susquehanna, 12-10 in the contest. In the second half, the Royal defense was terrific, as the Royals stopped six shots on goal. Three saves were credited to sophomore goalie Christina Black (Lafayette Hill, Pa./Mt. St. Joseph Academy), while as a team Scranton made three saves, as well.
The University of Scranton field hockey team returns to action on Tuesday, traveling to Marywood for a non-conference match-up. Things get underway at 7 p.m.
