SCRANTON, Pa. - Two goals in the second half by senior Lara Haab (Gladwyne, Pa./Country Day School Sacred Heart) catapulted the University of Scranton field hockey team to a 3-1 victory at Marywood in soggy conditions on Tuesday night.
With the win, the Royals - who are receiving votes in this week's NFCHA Division III Top 20 - moved to 9-0 overall on the year. The 9-0 start is the best for Scranton in program history, as well.
In the opening period against Marywood, it took 29 minutes for anyone to get on the board, but the Royals were the first to strike. There, senior Meghan Kearney (Broomall, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) scored her first goal of the year, unassisted, giving Scranton the early 1-0 lead.
Marywood, however, was able to find an equalizer almost two minutes later, scoring a goal to tie the match up at 1-1 entering intermission. In the second half, Haab then took the match over.
First in the 45th minute, Haab played a pass from senior Alyssa Whitman (Bethlehem, Pa./Saucon Valley) into the back of the net to give Scranton the lead at 2-1. For Whitman, it was her first assist of the year.
Then, in the 60th minute, Haab put the Pacers away with an unassisted goal. giving Scranton an insurmountable two-goal lead. The goal, which was the fourth for Haab on the year, was also the sixth of her career, as well.
Overall, Scranton held a sizable 23-5 edge on shots and a 17-3 advantage on penalty corners. In net, sophomore Christina Black (Lafayette Hill, Pa./Mt. St. Joseph Academy) made two saves in the second half to keep Marywood off the board in the victory.
The University of Scranton field hockey team returns to action on Friday evening, as the Royals host Juniata in Landmark Conference action at Fitzpatrick Field. Things get underway at 7 p.m.
