FORT MYERS, Fla. – The warm weather of southeastern Florida appears to be having quite an effect on The University of Scranton baseball team's offense.
The Royals racked up 16 hits in a 17-9 win over Gallaudet on Sunday afternoon on the second game of the team's spring break trip.
Scranton (5-3) was led by junior outfielder Tommy Trotter (Cranford, N.J./Cranford), who went 5-for-5 with a triple, two doubles, three RBIs and three runs scored. It was the first five-hit game of Trotter's career. Junior designated hitter Chase Standen (Newtown Square, Pa./St. Joseph's Prep) also had a triple, a double and drove in five in the victory.
The Royals took control quickly, scoring once in the first, four times in the second and six times in the third to take an 11-1 lead. Gallaudet (5-7) pulled to within 11-4 after scoring four times in the top of the eighth, but Scranton sealed the win with four runs of its own in the bottom of the eighth.
Senior righty Sean McNamara (Scarsdale, N.Y./Fordham Prep) worked into the eighth inning to pick up his third win of the season. He allowed eight runs, five earned, on eight hits while striking out four. He did not walk a batter.
The Royals will be back in action on Monday when they face MacMurray College at noon in Fort Myers, Fla.
