FORT MYERS, Fla. – Freshman lefty Kyle Bravin (Washington Township, N.J./Westwood) tossed a complete-game three-hitter in the opening game to help The University of Scranton baseball team split a doubleheader against Washington College on Tuesday on the team's spring break trip.
Bravin's work on the mound led the Royals to a 10-2 victory in the opener. Washington College used a 10-run fourth inning to win the second game, 10-5.
First game – Scranton 10, Washington College 2 – box score
Bravin allowed two unearned runs on three hits and two walks while striking out seven. He picked up his first career victory while making his first career start.
Scranton (7-4) scored three in the bottom of the first before Washington College (6-7) came back with two in the fourth. But the Royals took control with three in the fifth and four in the sixth.
Freshman first baseman Kevin Haag (Ossining, N.Y./Ossining/Bridgton Academy) led the offense, going 4-for-4 with four RBIs and two runs scored. Senior shortstop Patrick O'Dell (Phoenixville, Pa./St. Joseph's Prep) had three singles and scored three runs, and junior center fielder Tommy Trotter (Cranford, N.J./Cranford) singled twice, scored a run and stole a base. Sophomore Bryan Carmon (Flemington, N.J./Hunterdon Central) also came off the bench to deliver a two-run triple and also scored.
Second game – Washington College 10, Scranton 5 – box score
The Royals jumped out to a 5-0 lead after three innings, but Washington College scored 10 times in the fourth and held Scranton off the board the rest of the way.
Senior left fielder Anthony Simone (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Valley Senior) went 2-for-4 with a home run, an RBI and a run. Junior third baseman Michael Ratner (Langhorne, Pa./The Pennington School) had two hits and scored a run, junior right fielder Ryan Coonahan (Oreland, Pa./La Salle College H.S.) tripled and scored, and Trotter and sophomore first baseman Ian McIntosh (Newtown, Pa./La Salle College H.S.) had doubles.
Junior righty Liam Dougherty (Dalton, Pa./Lackawanna Trail) also tossed 2 1/3 scoreless innings of relief.
The Royals will complete their trip on Wednesday when they face Old Westbury in a doubleheader beginning at 9 a.m. in Fort Myers, Fla.
