HUNTINGTON, Pa. - In their first game action in over a week, the University of Scranton softball team dropped a pair of Landmark Conference games at Juniata on Sunday, losing game one, 12-6, and falling in game two, 8-4.
With the defeats, Scranton dropped to 5-6 overall and 0-2 in the Landmark Conference, while Juniata improved to 7-9 and 2-0 in the Landmark with the doubleheader sweep.
In the first game of the afternoon, Juniata jumped out to a 6-2 lead after three innings and never looked back, scoring 11 runs on 15 hits. Scranton was also hampered by fielding mistakes in the defeat, as the Royals made four errors in the contest.
Overall, Scranton still smacked 12 hits in the defeat and had three players post multiple hit contests. Leading the way was senior Shannon Stricker (Morrisville, Pa./Conwell Egan), who went 2-for-4 with four RBI and a double.
Senior Jacqueline DeSarro (Bethlehem, Pa./Bethlehem Catholic) and junior Morgan Rentzheimer (Laurys Station, Pa./Parkland) also went 2-for-4 in game one, while sophomore Molly Hampsey (Tunkhannock, Pa./Tunkhannock) had a triple in the defeat.
In game two, the Royals lept out to a 3-1 lead after three innings, but Juniata was able to score seven of the last eight runs of the contest to complete the doubleheader sweep with a four-run win.
Overall in game two, freshman Megan Zinn (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) was 2-for-4 with a run scored in the lead-off spot, while fellow freshman Casey DeSarno (Wall Township, N.J./Wall) was 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Senior Christine Kiefer (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh) also had an RBI in the defeat, as well.
The University of Scranton softball team is slated to return to action on Tuesday, hosting Cazenovia in a non-conference doubleheader at the Jessup Youth Sports Complex. Game one gets underway at 4 p.m.
