SCRANTON, Pa. – Sophomore righty Matt McDonald (Clarks Summit, Pa./Abington Heights) won for the second time in six days and junior center fielder Tommy Trotter (Cranford, N.J./Cranford) led the offense as The University of Scranton baseball team defeated Marywood, 6-4, on Monday afternoon at Pacers Field.
The Royals (16-19) won for the fourth time in their last five games and improved to 13-7 in non-conference play. They scored once in the first and three times in the second to take control, then scored single runs in the seventh and eighth, which thwarted the comeback by Marywood (13-20), which scored once in the seventh and three times in the eighth.
McDonald worked seven strong innings before tiring to start the eight, finishing with four runs allowed on 11 hits and three walks while striking out four. It was his longest start of the season and came five days after he worked 5 1/3 strong innings in a 15-4 win over Penn State-Abington last Wednesday.
Trotter singled, doubled, scored twice, drove in two runs and made a diving catch in center field. He has now hit safely in nine of the last 10 games and 26 of 35 games this season.
Junior right fielder Sean Haveron (Old Tappan, N.J./Northern Valley Regional) had two hits, junior shortstop Justin Howell (Millington, N.J./Watchung Hills) singled and drove in two runs, and freshman first baseman Kevin Haag (Ossining, N.Y./Ossining/Bridgton Academy) had a solo home run. Junior Anthony Caladie (Mountain Top, Pa./Crestwood) added a double and a run, and freshman second baseman Tim Gailor (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) singled and had an RBI sac fly, as well.
The Royals are back in action Tuesday when they travel to Edwardsville, Pa. to take on Wilkes in a non-conference game at 4 p.m.
