WEST CHESTER, Pa. – The University of Scranton women's track & field team kicked off the outdoor season with an outstanding showing at the Golden Ram Collegiate Invitational hosted by West Chester University on a cold and windy day on Saturday.
Junior Caroline Banas (Dallas, Pa./Holy Redeemer) tied for second in the high jump, clearing the bar at 1.53 meters while sophomore Emily de Onis (Blue Town, N.Y./Bayport-Blue Point) finished third in the 3,000 meter steeplechase with a time of 12:56.17.
The Royals placed a pair of runners in the top-five of the 5,000 meter run led by sophomore Rachel Kerr (Dickson City, Pa./Scranton Prep), who took third place after finishing the race in 18:30.08 while freshman Jessica Hoffmann (Millington, N.J./Watchung Hills Regional) followed with a fifth place result in the race.
Freshman Christina Piscitelli (New City, N.Y./Clarkstown South) finished fourth in the hammer throw, recording a toss of 35.88 meters on the day.
Freshman Meghan McGonigle (Mullica Hill, N.J./Gloucester Catholic), who tied for fourth in the high jump, earned a sixth place finish in the long jump with a leap of 4.70 meters while Banas placed 10th in the event.
Freshman Katarina Bieri (Westwood, N.J./Westwood Regional) brought home a sixth place result in the triple jump, posting a mark of 8.77 meters.
Sophomore Gabriela Fitzpatrick (South Bound Brook, N.J./Bound Brook) led a trio of Royals in the top-10 of the javelin throw with a toss of 28.84 meters. Junior Hannah Tracy (Ramsey, N.J./Ramsey) followed in eighth place while classmate Bevin Walker (Wyckoff, N.J./Indian Hills) recorded a ninth place result in the event.
In the 800 meter run, freshman Nikki George (Denville, N.J./Morris Knolls) and junior Nora Boussatta (Bloomfield, N.J./Bloomfield) placed eighth and ninth, respectively with George clocking in a 2:28.67, just under a second ahead of Boussatta.
Sophomore Abigail Corrigan (Carbondale, Pa./Holy Cross) finished ninth in the 1,500 meter run, crossing the stripe in 5:09.10 while junior Chrissy Noonan (Baldwin, N.Y./Baldwin) took ninth place in the 100 meter hurdles with a mark of 17.11.
Freshman Katherine Fafian (Staten Island, N.Y./Notre Dame Academy) finished ninth in the discus with a toss of 23.28 meters.
The Royals finished fourth in the 4x400 meter relay with a mark of 4:37.43.
Scranton will be back in action next Saturday at the Jim Thorpe Invitational hosted by Susquehanna starting at 10 a.m.
