Volleyball Finishes Off Carnegie Mellon Invite with 3-0 Victory over W&J

PITTSBURGH, Pa. - Junior Tess Ungerleider (Springboro, Ohio/Archbishop Alter) of The University of Scranton volleyball team put together the best effort of her career on the attack for the Royals against Washington & Jefferson on Saturday, as she finished with a game-high 15 kills in a 3-0 win to finish off the 2019 Carnegie Mellon Invitational.

In Scranton's first match of the day, they were defeated by Mount Union, 3-0. With the split, Scranton is now 6-5 overall on the year.

It was a dominant performance for the Royals in their nightcap against W&J, as they only trailed early in the first and third sets before pulling away, while in the second set they never trailed in a 12-point win.

In the win, Ungerleider was dominant, as she posted 15 kills and 10 digs on the afternoon. Setting up Ungerleider all match (and the rest of the attack for that matter), was junior Kindler Norman (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair), who had 36 assists, while adding 10 digs and six kills, as well.

Elsewhere, sophomore Molly Dunfee (King of Prussia, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) had 18 digs to lead the defense, while sophomore Sabrina LiVolsi (Washingtonville, N.Y./Washingtonville) ended with 16 digs to round out the top performers on the day for Scranton.

Up against a strong Mount Union team to begin the day in Pittsburgh, the Royals fell in straight sets, as the Raiders improved to 10-3 overall with the victory.

In the defeat, freshman Carah Vitkus (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) ended with seven kills, while Norman ended with six kills. Freshman Caileigh Cox (Randolph, N.J./Randolph) had 12 assists with lead the Royals in that category, while Norman finished with six digs.

The University of Scranton volleyball team will now take a week off, and return to action on Saturday, Sept. 21 as they return home to the John Long Center for a tri-match with Geneseo and Rowan. The Royals take on Geneseo at 12 p.m., then Rowan at 4 p.m.
