Men's Soccer Drops Overtime Heartbreaker to Drew

Box Score

MADISON, N.J. – Drew's Kevin Kiernan scored the game-winner 3:22 into the first overtime period and The University of Scranton men's soccer team (4-4-5, 1-1-3 Landmark) dropped a 1-0 heartbreaker to the Drew Rangers (6-7-1, 3-1-1 Landmark) on Wednesday night at Ranger Stadium in Madison.

In the 94th minute, Kiernan took a feed from Lucas Portadin and found the back of the net to give the Rangers the overtime victory.

Both teams had some chances in the early going as a header from junior Brendan King (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) went just wide in the ninth minute and Royals keeper Jake Hodlofski (Malvern, Pa./West Chester Prep) turned away a shot from Christian Tyson in the 13th minute. Hodlofski also tallied a save in the 30th minute and Scranton was able to mount some pressure in the final 15 minutes of the half, but were unable to solve Drew goalie Calum Erlenborn who made three saves in the opening stanza. Shots between the two teams were even at seven apiece after 45 minutes.

Hodlofski turned away an attempt from Kiernan in the 61st minute and just over 10 minutes later, the Rangers nearly took the lead on a shot from Thomas Zurkowski, but senior defender Jake Nubbemeyer (Warminster, Pa./Archbishop Wood) cleared it off the goal line for the Royals to keep things scoreless. In the final 15 minutes of regulation, both teams had a few opportunities, but things remained scoreless headed into the overtime period.

Kiernan's header went wide of the net in the 92nd minute, a couple minutes before his game-winner.

Drew held a slight 15-11 shot advantage in the contest and both Hodlofski and Erlenborn made three saves apiece for their respective sides.

The University of Scranton men's soccer team closes out the home portion of its regular season slate on Saturday as Moravian comes to town for a 4 p.m. tilt. Prior to the match, the team's senior class of Hodlofski, Nubbemeyer, Luke Backman (Oakland, N.J./Indian Hills), Andrew Luchansky (Allentown, Pa./Parkland), Bryce Schiltz (East Aurora, N.Y./East Aurora) and Terrence Quin (Stony Point, N.Y./Don Bosco Prep) will be honored in a ceremony.
