Box Score GLASSBORO, N.J. – The University of Scranton field hockey team (18-2) fought until the bitter end, but fell short in a 2-0 loss to the Washington & Lee Generals (18-0) in NCAA Tournament Second Round play on Saturday afternoon at Coach Richard Wackar Stadium on the campus of Rowan University.
Washington & Lee advances to play the host Profs in a quarterfinal matchup on Sunday, while the Royals see their historic season come to an end with an impressive 18-2 record.
Led by head coach Colleen Moyer, Scranton broke a program record with their 18 victories and captured the first NCAA Tournament victory in program history with an overtime win over Ursinus earlier this week.
The Royals controlled the flow of play for much of the first quarter and Generals goalie Sara Amil was forced to make a pair of saves after shots from senior Molly Sheehan (Haddonfield, N.J./Haddonfield Memorial) and sophomore Cori Davis (Millerstown, Pa./Greenwood). In the 14th minute, Scranton goalie Clare Maguire (Oreland, Pa./Mount Saint Joseph Academy) denied Washington & Lee's Grace Weise on one of her two opportunities and the game remained scoreless after one. The Generals were able to break through in the 19th minute as Freddie Tobeason sent a pass from the right side into the circle and Tess Muneses was on the receiving end for a 1-0 lead. For Scranton, a couple of opportunities presented themselves in the 28th minute, but Amil made a save to keep things at 1-0 headed into halftime.
Senior Allie Benadon (Hillsborough, N.J./Hillsborough) had a chance turned away by Amil in the 32nd minute and Tobeason struck a few minutes later to extend the Generals lead to 2-0. The Royals had a trio of penalty corners in the final three minutes of the quarter, but were unable to get on the board. Maguire kept it a 2-0 game with four saves in the fourth quarter including a penalty stroke save on Muneses in the 52nd minute.
Washington & Lee held a 14-8 shot advantage on the day as freshmen Reagan Dolan (Broomall, Pa./Bonner & Prendergast) paced the Royals with three, while the Royals held a 7-4 edge in penalty corners.
Maguire registered six saves in the game for Scranton and Amil made four saves for Washington & Lee.
There were eight senior members of The 2021 University of Scranton field hockey team in Benadon, Sheehan, Shannon Broderick (New Fairfield, Conn./New Fairfield), Shaelin de Wit (New Tripoli, Pa./Northwestern Lehigh), Amanda Gerenza (Stroudsburg, Pa./Pocono Mountain East), Ellie Lindauer (New Freedom, Pa./Susquehannock), Ashley Moore (Conshohocken, Pa./Mount Saint Joseph Academy) and Madison Nord (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Archbishop John Carroll).
