Five Different Players Score Goals, as Women's Soccer Cruises Past Kean, 5-0

UNION, N.J. - The University of Scranton women's soccer team came out and dominated from the start on Saturday vs. Kean, taking a 4-0 lead into halftime and never looking back in a convincing 5-0 victory on the road.

With the win, Scranton moved to 2-0 on the young season, while Kean dropped to 0-2 overall.

Early on, the Royals essentially put Kean away for the afternoon, scoring two goals in the first five minutes of regulation.

Two minutes into the contest, sophomore Claire Mulholland (Marlton, N.J./Cherokee) scored her first career goal (unassisted) to put the Royals up 1-0. This was followed up by a goal by another sophomore, Emily Tantala (Langhorne, Pa./Neshaminy), whose first career tally in the fifth minute put the Royals up, 2-0. Mulholland was credited with an assist on the play.

In the 34th minute, senior Steph Lowrey (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) scored her first goal of the 2021 season (and 10th of her career), unassisted, to put Scranton up, 3-0. And, in the 41st minute, the Royals ended a dominating half with a goal by sophomoreGab Richetti (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem East) to make it a 4-0 game at the break. Richetti's goal, which was her first, was assisted by freshman Samantha Goffice (Gilbertsville, Pa./Boyertown Area).

The second half saw more of the same for the Royals, as they added one more goal and pitched a shutout on the defensive end. The final tally of the contest came in the 52nd minute when senior Grace Elliott (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) scored the first goal of her season and seventh of her career. Sophomore Niamh Healy (Orangeburg, N.Y./Tappan Zee) was credited with an assist on the play.

Overall in the victory, Scranton absolutely dominated the statsheet for the second straight day, outshooting Kean by a 31-7 margin, while holding a 5-1 edge on corner kicks. The Royals defense was able to collect a shutout win, as senior Amanda Steinberg (Ronkonkoma, N.Y./Sachem North) and sophomoreDana Ogilvie (Piscataway, N.J./Piscataway) made three combined saves to preserve it.

The University of Scranton women's soccer team returns to action on Wednesday, as they travel across town to take on Marywood. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
