Women's Soccer Uses Big First Half to Roll Past Kean in Season Opener, 5-0

GALLOWAY, N.J. – The No. 10 University of Scranton women's soccer team (1-0) scored five goals in the final 20 plus minutes of the first half and cruised to a 5-0 victory over the Kean Cougars (0-1) in the season opener for both teams on Saturday afternoon at the Stockton University Tournament.

Scranton threatened early and often against Kean goalie Julia Masucci who made eight saves in the first 20 plus minutes of the game. Senior Claire Sites (Collegeville, Pa./Spring-Ford Area) opened the scoring in the 25th minute as she gathered a loose ball in the box following a corner kick for the opening goal of the game and junior Mary Haggerty (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) joined the scoresheet exactly a minute later to quickly make it a 2-0 game. From there, sophomore Samantha Goffice (Gilbertsville, Pa./Boyertown Area) took a feed from junior Emily Tantala (Langhorne, Pa./Neshaminy) and was able to slide a shot past Masucci in the 35th minute for a 3-0 edge.

The duo of freshman Linda Daly (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Lakeland) and junior Alaina McLaughlin (West Chester, Pa./Bishop Shanahan) teamed up on each of the next two goals as Daly found the back of the net in the 40th minute and McLaughlin tallied a goal in the 43rd minute to create the 5-0 advantage. This marked the first career goal for both student-athletes.

Head coach Colleen Pivirotto's team held a dominant 28-2 shot advantage led by seven from junior Niamh Healy (Orangeburg, N.Y./Tappan Zee) and four from senior Teresa Hegarty (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Merion Mercy Academy).  

In goal for the Royals, sophomore Nicole Olson (Stoughton, Mass./Ursuline Academy) who made one save in 59 plus minutes of action in her first collegiate start and junior Dana Ogilvie (Piscataway, N.J./Piscataway) who added one save over the final 30 minutes combined on the shutout.

Masucci made 11 saves in the setback for the Cougars.

The Royals will battle host Stockton to close out the season-opening tournament on Sunday with action slated to get underway at 5 p.m.
