Volleyball Notches Sixth Straight Win with Sweep of Drew

SCRANTON, Pa. – The University of Scranton volleyball team (10-7, 5-0 Landmark) extended its winning streak to six matches with a 3-0 sweep of the Drew Rangers (4-12, 2-3 Landmark) on Tuesday night at the John Long Center in Scranton.

Scranton 3, Drew 0 (27-25, 25-16, 25-17)

The two teams traded runs for much of the first set until Scranton used four straight points to take an 18-13 lead on a kill by sophomore Gwen Koester (Merrick, N.Y./Sacred Heart Academy). From there, Drew was able to battle back to even things at 22 apiece and things were then tied at 25 before consecutive kills by fellow sophomore Deanna Whelpley (Congers, N.Y./Immaculate Heart Academy) closed out the 27-25 win for the Royals.

Scranton used five straight points in the early going of the second set to take a 9-4 lead and Drew was never able to get closer than four the rest of the way. A Rangers' attacking error made it 17-10 in favor of the Royals and head coach Jamie Spangler's team then took four of the final five points in the set including two kills by junior Sophia Hadjiyane (Huntington, N.Y./John Glenn) to close out the 25-16 victory.

In the third set, the Royals led 7-6 in the early going before a kill by Whelpley ignited a stretch where the hosts tallied seven of the next eight points to take a 14-7 lead. Scranton later held a 17-12 advantage and then recorded the next six points for a 23-12 lead and a Drew service error sealed the sweep with the 25-17 win.

Whelpley led the Royals with 15 kills and senior Stephanie Margolies (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) added 14 of her own in the victory, while freshman Cammi Quirk (Oakland, N.J./Ridgewood) helped set up the attack with 21 assists and junior Gianna Detorie (Rumford, R.I./Bishop Feehan) had 17.

Detorie and Margolies also added three service aces apiece and sophomore Maddie Forry (Reading, Pa./Exeter Township) paced the defense with 21 digs.

Teeya Desgoutte had seven kills to lead Drew in the setback.

The Royals hit the road to battle Wilkes in a Landmark Conference matchup on Friday night with first serve slated for 7 p.m.
