WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – The University of Scranton volleyball team (11-7, 6-0 Landmark) remained unbeaten with a 3-1 victory over the Wilkes Colonels (7-13, 0-4 Landmark) at the Marts Center on Friday night in Wilkes-Barre.
Scranton 3, Wilkes 1 (25-11, 21-25, 25-15, 25-14)
The Royals jumped out to an early lead in the first set and a Colonels' attack error made it 11-4 in favor of the visitors. From there, Wilkes was unable to get any closer than four the rest of the way and a pair of service aces from freshman Lexi Brown (Macomb, Mich./Dakota) came as part of a nine-point run that extended the advantage to 21-8 and sophomore Kate Rutowski (Park Ridge, N.J./Park Ridge) delivered a kill to seal the 25-11 victory.
In the second set, Wilkes took a 14-8 lead, but Scranton then responded with five of the next six points that brought them within a pair at 16-14. The Colonels were able to hold on to even the match with a 25-21 win.
Scranton led 9-5 in the third set and later used a seven-point run including two kills apiece by sophomore Deanna Whelpley (Congers, N.Y./Immaculate Heart Academy) and junior Erin Keaveney (Collegeville, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) to open a 21-11 advantage. Keaveney and senior Stephanie Margolies (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) both came through with kills as the Royals closed out a 25-15 victory.
Wilkes led 8-7 in the fourth set before Scranton grabbed the lead for good with three straight points and eventually held a 16-12 edge following a ball handling error. The Royals tallied nine of the final 10 points to seal the 25-14 victory and remain unbeaten in Landmark Conference play.
Whelpley paced the Royals with nine kills, while Margolies added eight and freshman Macey Brown (San Antonio, Tex./Churchill) had seven. Freshman Cammi Quirk (Oakland, N.J./Ridgewood) helped set up the attack with 24 assists and junior Gianna Detorie (Rumford, R.I./Bishop Feehan) added 13 assists to go along with five service aces.
Sophomore Maddie Forry (Reading, Pa./Exeter Township) had 11 digs to lead the way defensively and Detorie recorded eight in the victory.
The Royals will battle Moravian on Saturday night in Bethlehem with first serve set for 7 p.m.
