HUNTINGDON, Pa. – Sophomore Justin Curran (Media, Pa./The Shipley School) scored the game-winner in the 72nd minute and The University of Scranton men's soccer team (7-2-4, 1-2-3 Landmark) notched a 2-1 victory over the Juniata College Eagles (5-7-1, 1-5 Landmark) on Saturday afternoon at Gibbel Stadium in Huntingdon.
Fellow sophomore Gavin Scavino (Succasunna, N.J./Gill St. Bernard's) sent a pass to Curran who ripped a shot from outside the 18-yard box and beat a diving Juniata goalie to give the Royals a 2-1 lead. The goal was Curran's third of the season.
Scranton had a chance in the ninth minute when junior Ciaran Corr (Newtown Square, Pa./Marple Newtown) had his shot turned away by Eagles' goalie Axel Grater as things remained scoreless for the time being. From there, head coach Matt Pivirotto's team saw a number of quality chances in the first 20 minutes, but it was Juniata that broke through first in the 20th minute with a goal from Ian Edwards. Grater added another save in the 23rd minute and Scranton was then able to find the equalizer in the 34th minute as freshman Matt Capretto (Hockessin, Del./Charter School of Wilmington) played a ball to Corr who was able to chip a shot over Grater for his team-leading sixth goal of the year.
Corr saw his shot saved by Maxwell Mattioni in the 50th minute and the two sides continued to battle which set the stage for Curran's afore-mentioned game-winner in the 72nd minute. The Royals were able to limit the Eagles to just three shots in the second half including an attempt from Edwards in the 89th minute that was denied by sophomore goalie Charlie Smith (Devon, Pa./Conestoga).
The Royals held a 14-6 advantage in shots led by three apiece from Corr, junior Adam Havens (Freehold, N.J./Freehold Township) and senior Patrick Walls Kelly (Devon, Pa./Conestoga). Smith registered two saves in the victory.
