SCRANTON, Pa.
– Following a last minute goal by each team, The University of Scranton men's soccer team (8-2-5, 2-2-4 Landmark) battled the Susquehanna River Hawks (3-9-3, 1-6-1 Landmark) to a 3-3 draw on Saturday afternoon at Weiss Field in Scranton.

With the tie, the Royals currently sit in fifth place in the Landmark standings with one conference game remaining. The top six teams will qualify for the conference tournament that is slated to get underway with quarterfinal action on Oct. 31.

Scranton, Goucher and Moravian all currently have 10 points and the Royals and Greyhounds will do battle next Saturday, Oct. 28 at Weiss Field.

The Royals started off hot with a goal by senior Dylan Estevez (Garnerville, N.Y./Don Bosco Prep) in the fourth minute off a beautiful assist by junior Ciaran Corr (Newtown Square, Pa./Marple Newtown) and Estevez's first goal of the season gave the hosts an early 1-0 lead. Senior goalie Joe Weinstein made an early save seconds later to keep things at 1-0 for the time being, but Susquehanna evened the game in the 23rd minute with a penalty kick goal by Max Paczewski. Both teams had a couple of chances over the final 20 minutes of the half, but the one-all deadlock held.

In the second half, both defenses held strong until the River Hawks took the lead in the 74th minute on  Zach Polovitch's goal off a feed by Ben Sweeney. The Royals answered back with a goal of their own in the 87th minute as Corr slotted home a shot to the far post following a pass by sophomore Justin Curran (Media, Pa./The Shipley School). In the final minute of play, sophomore Tyler Colton (Syracuse, N.Y./Central Square) gave Scranton a 3-2 edge with a goal assisted by freshman Matt Capretto (Hockessin, Del./Charter School of Wilmington), but just 0:20 later Susquehanna responded with a goal by John Kuderka to settle the draw.

Corr leads the team with seven goals on the season, while Colton found his second goal of the year.

Scranton held an 18-11 edge in shots led by five from Corr and senior goalie Joe Weinstein (Manasquan, N.J./Manasquan) registered five saves in his second start of the season.

Prior to the game, the team recognized the 2023 senior class of Weinstein, Estevez, Patrick Walls Kelly (Devon, PA/ Conestoga), Nick Addamo (Holbrook, NY/ Sachem East), Christian Rivero (Freehold, NJ/ Colts Neck), and Bryce Shalbert (student assistant coach).

The Royals will host Haverford on Tuesday night at Weiss Field with start time set for 7 p.m.
