SCRANTON, Pa. – The University of Scranton men's soccer team (8-3-5) dropped a 1-0 decision to the Haverford College Fords (5-3-8) in a non-conference match on Tuesday night at Weiss Field in Scranton.
The first chance of the game for either side came in the seventh minute when senior goalie Joe Weinstein (Manasquan, N.J./Manasquan) denied a shot by the Fords' Aidan Lacy. Scranton had a chance in the 14th minute, but a shot by senior Dylan Estevez (Garnerville, N.Y./Don Bosco Prep) rolled wide of the target as things remained scoreless for the time being. Both teams held strong defensively over the remainder of the half and the game was deadlocked at zero at the break.
In the second half, Haverford struck for the lone goal of the game in the 56th minute as Kieran Kunihiro ripped a shot from just outside the 18-yard box and slotted it home at the near post for a 1-0 lead. Weinstein tallied a trio of saves later in the half in the 68th, 72nd and 73rd minutes that kept it at a one-goal game. The Royals had a pair of chances from freshman Matt Capretto (Hockessin, Del./Charter School of Wilmington) and sophomore Dylan Matamala (New Rochelle, N.Y./South Kent School), but were unable to find the equalizer in the 1-0 setback.
Haverford held a 10-5 shot advantage in the contest and Weinstein recorded four saves on the night for the Royals.
Scranton will host Moravian in the regular season finale on Saturday afternoon at Weiss Field with start time slated for 1 p.m. The Royals would secure a spot in next week's Landmark Conference Tournament with a victory over the Greyhounds.
