RADNOR, Pa. – The University of Scranton men's basketball team (1-4) dropped a 74-62 decision to the Cabrini Cavaliers (1-5) in non-conference action on Tuesday night at Nerney Field House in Radnor.
Cabrini was able to get off to a fast start and grabbed a 14-3 lead and later led as much as 23-5 at the 11:12 mark before the Royals began to put together a rally over the remainder of the first half. Scranton scored the final five points of the half on a layup by sophomore Matthew Hanley (Staten Island, N.Y./Monsignor Farrell) and a three by junior Cameron Khoza (State College, Pa./Bishop Guilfoyle) that sliced the deficit to 12 at 34-22.
Early in the second half, sophomore Luca Baratta (Richboro, Pa./Perkiomen School) buried consecutive threes which brought the Royals within single digits at 42-33 at the 16:31 mark. Following a 9-0 run by Cabrini, Scranton then put together a 16-6 run as a free throw by junior Colin Merriman (Mount Laurel, N.J./Camden Catholic) drew the visitors back within eight at 57-49 with 8:08 remaining. From there, the Cavaliers stretched the lead back to 12 at 66-54 and the Royals were unable to get any closer than the rest of the way.
Senior Tahaj Parland (Neptune, N.J./Mater Dei) matched his career-high with 18 points, while Baratta and Hanley each added a career-best of their own with 11 points and Hanley was a perfect 5-of-5 from the floor.
Donoven Mack paced four Cavaliers in double figures with 18 points.
Scranton shot 46.2% (24-of-52) from the floor and 35.0% (7-of-20) from beyond the arc, while Cabrini was 23-of-50 (46.0%) from the field and 3-of-18 (16.7%) from long range.
The Royals are back in action on Wednesday, Nov. 29 at Wilkes for the Landmark Conference opener with action slated to get underway at 7 p.m.
