SCRANTON, Pa. – The University of Scranton women's soccer team (2-2-1) built a two-goal lead in the first half and rolled to a 3-0 victory over Penn State Berks (2-2) in the program's 2023 home opener on Wednesday night at Weiss Field in Scranton.
Scranton threatened offensively from the outset and senior Niamh Healy (Orangeburg, N.Y./Tappan Zee) recorded an early shot just 0:27 into the game. Both Healy and junior Emily Bannon (Middletown, N.Y./Minisink Valley) recorded quality chances including a header from Bannon that deflected off the crossbar in the 16th minute. The Royals grabbed a 1-0 lead in the 23rd minute when senior Mary Haggerty (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) delivered a beauty of a free kick into the box and Healy finished it in the box for her team-leading fourth goal of the season. From there, the hosts continued to look dominant offensively and in the 43nd minute, sophomore Dani Orecchio (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) played a ball over the top to classmate Katie Brennan (Bohemia, N.Y./St. John The Baptist, DHS) who slotted a shot home to make it a 2-0 game at the half.
In the second half, Penn State Berks registered a shot in the 52nd minute, but junior goalie Nicole Olson (Stoughton, Mass./Ursuline Academy) denied a shot from Madi Craley as the score remained 2-0 for the time being. Just a minute later, Scranton had a pair of chances and then extended the lead in the 57th minute as senior Emily Tantala (Langhorne, Pa./Neshaminy) crossed a ball into the box where Bannon tapped it home at the far post to extend the lead to 3-0. Head coach Colleen Pivirotto's team continued to control play for much of the final 30 plus minutes and Olson tallied three saves to preserve her second shutout of the season.
For Bannon and Brennan, the goals marked their first of the young season.
The Royals held a 24-6 shot advantage in the contest led by seven from Healy and five from Bannon.
Sophia Gonzalez recorded seven saves in 63:30 of action for Penn State Berks.
Scranton hits the road to battle Stevens in a non-conference matchup on Saturday afternoon and start time is slated for 3 p.m.
