Field Hockey Falls 1-0 to York in Home Opener on Saturday

Scranton, PA -- The University of Scranton field hockey team battled hard but came up short in a 1-0 defeat to York in the home opener at Weiss Field on Saturday afternoon.

The Royals had an early opportunity off a penalty corner as junior Reagan Dolan (Broomall, Pa. / Bonner & Prendergast) had her shot saved by York's goalkeeper Belle Fields. Junior goalkeeper Gianna Travia (Havertown, Pa. / Cardinal O'Hara) made a save in the final minutes of the opening quarter to keep the Spartans off the board.

York scored the lone goal of the game in the opening minute of the second period as Katie Martino beat out Travia with a long range shot. Senior Elle Collins (Long Valley, N.J. / West Morris Central) made a defensive save late in the second quarter to keep the Royals within one headed into halftime.

The Spartans continued to apply pressure in the second half but sophomore Kiera Lamb (Doylestown, Pa. / Central Bucks East) made a clutch defensive save of her own and the game remained 1-0. However, the Royals struggle to create any offensive chances in the second half and went on to lose 1-0.

Travia had a strong game in goal for Scranton as she finished with six saves.

The Royals are back in action on Wednesday night when they host King's at Weiss Field at 7:00 PM
