SCRANTON, Pa. – Senior Emily Tantala (Langhorne, Pa./Neshaminy) scored a pair of goals and junior Emily Bannon (Middletown, N.Y./Minisink Valley) matched the single-game program record with three assists as The University of Scranton women's soccer team (1-1-1) scored two goals in each half en route to a 4-1 victory over Marywood on Wednesday night at the Pacers' Turf Field.
Bannon is the eighth player in program history to record three assists in a game and the first since Taylor Stevens on Oct. 21, 2017 at Goucher.
Scranton struck first just 0:21 into the game when Bannon fed a ball into the box to senior Niamh Healy (Orangeburg, Pa./Tappan Zee) who buried the shot for the early 1-0 advantage. The Royals continued to threaten in the early stages of the contest and Marywood goalie Veronica Talerico denied a penalty kick in the sixth minute that kept it at 1-0 for the time being. In the 10th minute, Bannon served a cross into the box from the right sideline and Tantala headed it home at the far post to make it a 2-0 game. The Pacers fought back with a goal in the 18th minute that cut the lead in half, and despite several chances from the Royals over the remainder of the half including a shot from sophomore Dani Orecchio (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) that hit the woodwork in the 34th minute, things remained 2-1 at the break.
Bannon nearly extended the lead in the 52nd minute when her attempt was cleared off the goal line by a Marywood defender. Just over three minutes later, Healy raced down the sideline and sent a feed to senior Mary Haggerty (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) who buried a shot past Talerico to extend the lead to 3-1. Freshman Libby Masterson (Long Valley, N.J./West Morris Central) recorded a quality scoring chance for the Royals in the 69th minute and the visitors later made it 4-1 in the 78th minute when Bannon delivered another nice cross into the box and Tantala tapped it home for her second goal of the night.
Head coach Colleen Pivirotto's team held a 24-7 shot advantage on the night and junior goalie Nicole Olson (Stoughton, Mass./Ursuline Academy) made a pair of saves in net.
Talerico registered seven saves for the Pacers.
Scranton hits the road to battle Vassar in a non-conference matchup on Saturday afternoon with action slated to get underway at 3 p.m.
