MADISON, N.J. – Sophomore Jimmy O'Malley (Maple Glen, Pa./La Salle College) broke a program record in the 1,000 free, but The University of Scranton men's swimming & diving team dropped a 171.5-128.5 dual meet decision to the Drew Rangers on Saturday at F.M. Kirby Pool in Madison.
Scranton caps the dual meet portion of its schedule with an 8-4 record.
O'Malley won the 1,000 free with a new program-record time of 9:50.95, marking the fastest time in the Landmark Conference this season and surpassing the previous program-best time of 9:52.80 that had been set by Mitchell Colby on Feb. 10, 2013.
The Maple Glen, Pa., native also won the 500 free with a time of 4:47.90, just ahead of Drew's Yan Zheng Lew who took second in 4:48.00. O'Malley added a second-place finish in the 200 fly in 2:00.54.
Fellow sophomore Mike Finley (New Milford, N.J./Don Bosco Prep) swam to a first-place finish in the 200 back in 2:00.88 and finished second in the 100 back with a time of 53.23 seconds.
Freshman Tommy Nappi (West Caldwell, N.J./James Caldwell) took second in both the 100 (1:00.63) and 200 breaststroke (2:14.05) and finished third in the 200 IM in 2:01.58. For Nappi, his 200 breaststroke time marked the ninth-best in program history.
Sophomore Matt Sherry (Glenside, Pa./La Salle College) tied for second in the 100 fly along with Drew's Finn Armitt at 51.09 seconds, marking the third-fastest time in program history in the event and a new personal-best for Sherry. The sophomore also finished third in the 50 free in 22.06 seconds.
Scranton finished second in both the 200 medley and 200 free relays.
On the diving boards, freshman Tim Hause (Collingswood, N.J./Collingswood) won the one-meter event with 188.85 points and the three-meter dive at 198.30 points.
The Royals will return to the pool on Feb. 15 for the Landmark Conference Championships that will get underway at 6 p.m.
