Shaw Leads Field Hockey to Overtime Win Against Misericordia, 2-1

SCRANTON, PA -- Junior Annie Shaw scored the game-winning goal in overtime as The University of Scranton field hockey team defeated Misericordia University 2-1 at Weiss Field on Tuesday night. 

The Basics

  • Final Score (OT): Scranton 2, Misericordia 1
  • Records: Scranton (11-2), Misericordia (4-7)
  • The Royals are now 3-0 in overtime games this season. 

How it Happened

  • Scranton had ample opportunities in the first quarter, recording eight shots, three shots on goal and three corner attempts, but were unable to score. Misericordia did not record a shot against the Royals' defense in the quarter.
  • Misericordia took a 1-0 lead in the third minute of the second quarter on their first corner attempt of the game. After the initial insertion ricocheted out of the circle, Misericordia's Ava Cirigliano collected and found Ashley Pitz in the circle, who redirected the pass into the goal, scoring on the Cougars' first shot of the game.
  • The Royals answered with a goal of their own in the first minute of the third quarter. Graduate student Bridget Abraldes intercepted a pass just outside of the circle and passed to Shaw, who buried the reversal shot while falling to her left, tying the game at 1-1.
  • Despite taking 11 shots over the next two quarters, the Royals could not break the tie, sending the game into overtime. 
  • In the fourth minute of the first overtime period, graduate student Elle Collins connected with Shaw, who flicked a shot past Misericordia's goalie Sarah Bogina for the game-winner. 

Top Performers

  • Shaw scored two goals, recording her third game-winner of the year and her second overtime goal of the season.
  • The Royals' defensive unit held the Cougars to just one shot in the game,
  • Abraldes registered one assist for the fourth straight game.

  • Scranton held a convincing 23-1 advantage in shots and a 10-1 edge in shots on goal.
  • The Royals held a 9-1 edge in corner attempts.
