No. 9 Women's Soccer Advances to Second Round of NCAA Tournament After Defeating Marywood 3-1 in First Round

SCRANTON, PA -- The University of Scranton women's soccer team defeated the Marywood University Pacers 3-1 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday afternoon at Weiss Field.

The Basics

  • Final Score: No. 9 Scranton 3, Marywood 1
  • Records: No. 9 Scranton (18-1-2), Marywood (15-4-2)
  • With the victory, Scranton has secured a spot in the second round of the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2022.

How it Happened

  • Scranton scored just 2:59 into the game as senior Samantha Goffice ripped a shot from the top of the box into the top right corner of the net to put the Royals ahead 1-0.
  • Graduate student Niamh Healy added to Royals lead in the 24th minute of the game as she headed a corner kick from fellow graduate student Mary Haggerty past the keeper and into the left side of the net for the goal.
  • Healy struck again nearly ten minutes later as the graduate student buried a penalty kick to put Scranton ahead 3-0 in the 34th minute.
  • Marywood got on the board with just 18 seconds left in the first half as Josephine Sorce shot it past senior goalie Nicole Olson for the goal, cutting the Royals' lead to 3-1.

Top Performers

  • Healy recorded her 15th and 16th goals of the season, which leads the Landmark Conference by seven.
  • Goffice scored her fifth goal of the season, which has her tied for second on the team despite playing in only 12 games. 
  • Olson tallied three saves in the contest.

  • The Royals out shot Marywood 17-6 in the contest. 
  • Marywood held a 4-2 edge in corner kicks over the Royals.
