SWEET 16 BOUND! Griffin & Healy Lead No. 9 Women's Soccer to NCAA Second Round Victory Against No. 19 Wesleyan, 2-0

SCRANTON, PA -- The University of Scranton women's soccer team defeated No. 19 Wesleyan University 2-0 in the second round of the NCAA Tournament on Sunday afternoon at Weiss Field.

The Basics
  • Final Score: No. 9 Scranton - 2, No. 19 Wesleyan - 0
  • Records: No. 9 Scranton (19-1-2), No. 19 Wesleyan (14-2-3)
  • With the win, the Royals advance to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament.
  • This marks the third time in the past four seasons that Scranton has made it to the Sweet 16 (2021, 2022). 
How it Happened
  • Junior Morgan Griffin scored the opening goal of the game in the 65th minute as she received a pass into the left side of the box from senior Samantha Goffice and perfectly placed a shot into the bottom right corner of the net to give the Royals a 1-0 lead.
  • In the 83rd minute, graduate student Niamh Healy added to the tally as she took a pass from classmate Claire Mulholland and ripped a shot that got deflected by a defender right after it was hit and went over the outstretched arms of Wesleyan's goalkeeper Molly Brumbach into the top left corner of the goal to put Scranton up 2-0. 
Top Performers
  • Healy recorded her 17th goal of the season, two short of her career-high 19 which she set in 2023. Healy now ranks fourth in program history in both career points (128) and career goals (57).
  • Griffin scored her fifth goal of the season which ranks tied for second on the team.
  • Goffice picked up her fourth assist of the year, while Mulholland registered her fifth assist.
  • Senior goalkeeper Nicole Olson and the Scranton back line of Aileen Carr, Alexis Ocasio, Liv Enderle, Emily Tantala, and Caroline Connolly held Wesleyan to just seven shots all game which ties for the lowest in a game for the Cardinals this season.
  • Olson finished the game with two saves.

  • Healy took a game-high nine shots including four on goal.
  • Scranton out shot Wesleyan 16-7 in the contest and held a 2-1 edge in corners.
