Field Hockey Takes Down Drew 5-2 in First Round of Landmark Playoffs

SCRANTON, PA -- The No. 3 seed University of Scranton field hockey team scored three goals in the fourth quarter to take down the No. 6 seed Drew University Rangers by a final score of 5-2 in round one of the Landmark Conference playoffs on Saturday afternoon at Weiss Field.

The Basics

  • Final Score: Scranton 5, Drew 2

How it Happened

  • Drew opened the scoring with 2:14 left in the first quarter on their second corner attempt in a row as Emma Rider deflected the initial shot to Emily Caporrino, who snuck it by senior goalie Gianna Travia to give Drew the 1-0 advantage.
  • The Royals responded late in the second quarter. After freshman Shana Goldsmith took the ball from midfield to the circle, she connected with senior Abbie Hoyle, whose shot went off the cage and deflected right to graduate student Katie Redding, who poked in the game-tying goal.
  • Scranton took their first lead of the day 1:09 into the second half on a corner attempt. Senior Lauren Franco inserted the ball to sophomore Maggie Keys, who found senior Reagan Dolan who ripped a shot from the top of the circle into the back of the cage to make it 2-1 Royals.
  • Drew responded quickly, however, tying the game less than seven minutes later, as Tyler Olivio took a feed from Chandler Straub and scored her first goal of the game, tying things up at 2-2.
  • Junior Annie Shaw broke the tie late in the fourth quarter, taking a crosser from junior Emily Gallagher and pushing it by Rangers' goalie Beth Kelly and putting Scranton ahead 3-2.
  • Franco added an insurance goal just three minutes later after scoring on a penalty stroke attempt, firing the shot into the top left corner of the cage for the goal.
  • Less than one minute later, the Royals scored again. This time it was graduate student Bridget Abraldes taking a pass from Redding inside the circle and burying the backhanded shot to give the Royals a 5-2 advantage.

Top Performers

  • Franco and Redding led the Royals with 3 points apiece, each scoring one goal and one assist.
  • Gallagher earned her first career point on her fourth quarter assist.

Inside the Box Score

  • Scranton held a 24-4 advantage in shots and a 12-2 edge in shots on goal.
  • The Royals held the 11-2 edge in penalty corner attempts.
