Volleyball Drops Heartbreaker at Messiah

MECHANICSBURG, PA -- The University of Scranton women's volleyball team finished the regular season with a hard-fought 3-2 loss to Messiah University Thursday night.

The Basics

  • Final Score: 3-2L (24-26, 22-25, 25-23, 26-24, 7-15)
  • Records: Scranton (16-13, 8-1), Messiah (22-7, 7-0)

How it Happened

  • The Royals and Falcons traded leads in the first set, but the Messiah finished on top 26-24.
  • Scranton took an 8-1 lead in the second, but Messiah scored five straight points to bring the set within two. The Falcons would hold on to win 22-25 and take a 2-0 advantage. 
  • The Royals came back in the third set, taking a 14-7 lead before the Falcons tied things up at 19 a piece. Senior Sophia Hadjiyane delivered the set-winning kill to keep the Royals alive, 25-23.
  • Scranton's momentum carried into the fourth set as they got an early lead over the Falcons, 9-4. Messiah once again came back to tie the set at 24-24. A kill by sophomore Cammi Quirk followed by a block by Hadjiyane and classmate Erin Keaveney would boost the Royals over the Falcons 26-24, forcing a fifth set. 
  • Messiah jumped out to a lead in the fifth set, and held on to finish 15-7, defeating the Royals 3-2.  

Top Performers

  • Hadjiyane led the game in kills with 15.
  • Senior Gianna Detorie recorded a game-high 32 assists.
  • Junior Camryn Hoffman led the game in digs with 26, and tied Messiah's Makenzie Adams for a game-high of five aces. 

Inside the Box Score

  • Scranton had numerous game leaders in all statistical categories.
  • The Royals finish the regular season 16-13 overall and 8-1 in Landmark play, earning the #2 seed in the Landmark Conference tournament.
