CARLISLE, Pa.
-- The University of Scranton men's lacrosse team (1-2) battled, but a lopsided first quarter proved to be the difference in the game as the Royals fell 12-9 against #5 Dickinson College (2-0) on Saturday afternoon at the Biddle Field Complex in Carlisle.

Five different Royals got on the score sheet, while sophomore goalie Declan Allen (Garden City, N.Y./Millbrook) made a game-high 13 saves.

The Red Devils got on the board first at the 14:25 mark to take the early 1-0 lead. They would then score five more unanswered goals, ending the first quarter with a 6-0 lead.

The Royals got on the board just a few minutes into the second quarter as sophomore Pat McCormack (Livingston, N.J./Livingston) scored a goal assisted by senior Joe Boyle (Huntington, N.Y./St. Anthony's) at the 12:45 mark. The two teams then traded goals back and forth, and with two goals in the quarter from sophomore Kyle Holmes (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan), the Royals entered halftime down 8-3.

Dickinson opened the third quarter with back-to-back goals, extending their lead to 10-3. Holmes responded for Scranton with his third goal of the day at the 6:45 mark, but Dickinson answered right back with a goal of their own just 16 seconds later. McCormack and senior Matthew McAree (Manhasset, N.Y./Manhasset) both scored before the quarter ended, reducing the deficit to five with fifteen minutes left to play in the game.

With the momentum gained at the end of the third quarter, the Royals opened the scoring in the fourth quarter with an early goal from senior Kyle Bennett (Havertown, Pa/Haverford). Holmes followed him up with another Royals' goal, cutting the Dickinson lead down to 11-8.

The Red Devils scored their 12th goal of the game with eight minutes to play, extending their lead to 4. Boyle then scored again for the Royals with 2:12 to play, cutting the lead to 12-9, but it was too late as the Royals' comeback fell short.

Holmes led the team with four goals, while McCormack scored twice and picked up three ground balls. McAree and Boyle combined for five assists and graduate student Colin Pierce (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) led the team with six ground balls.

The men's lacrosse team returns to action Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Stockton University.
