Women's Tennis Topples Belhaven (Miss.); Falls to Ohio Wesleyan

ORLANDO, Fla. – The University of Scranton women's tennis team (3-4) split a pair of matches with Ohio Wesleyan (6-2) and Belhaven (1-14) on Thursday in Orlando.

Scranton dropped a 5-4 heartbreaker to Ohio Wesleyan before rolling to an 8-1 victory over Belhaven (Miss.).

Ohio Wesleyan 5, Scranton 4

In doubles play, the duo of graduate student Lily Nowak (Freeland, Pa./Hazleton Area)/junior Daniella Wisniewski (Bedminster, N.J./Bernards) rolled to an 8-1 win at the first flight but Ohio Wesleyan held a 2-1 edge headed into singles play.

Nowak cruised to a 6-1, 6-2 victory over the Battling Bishops' Ali Shanzay in No. 1 singles and Wisniewski posted a 6-1, 6-3 win against Kaitlyn Quinn at the No. 2 singles flight. Senior Maddy Abood (Plainfield, N.J./Union Catholic) added a 6-2, 1-6, 10-4 victory over Maisie Dugger in No. 6 singles action, but Ohio Wesleyan was able to hold on for the 5-4 win.

Scranton 8, Belhaven (Mis.) 1

Belhaven recorded a victory at the No. 1 doubles flight, but the duo of junior Julia Nocentino (Mantua, N.J./Kingsway Regional) and senior Lydia Grossman (Honesdale, Pa./Honesdale) posted an 8-0 win at the second flight and the Royals added a forfeit victory for a 2-1 edge.

Sophomore Olivia Sirico (Westtown, N.Y./Minisink Valley) rolled to a 6-2, 6-1 win over Lily Grace in No. 1 singles and classmate Paige Hunt (West Henrietta, N.Y./Rush-Henrietta) added a 6-1, 4-6, 10-6 victory against Evey Moore at the second singles flight.

In the third singles match, junior Brigid O'Mara (Pleasantville, N.Y./Kennedy Catholic Prep) recorded a straight-set victory (6-3, 6-1) and fellow junior Taralyn Reilly (Archbald, Pa./Valley View) added a 6-3, 6-1 win of her own in the fourth flight.

Freshman Haley Kenny (Vestal, N.Y./Seton Catholic Central) defeated Belhaven's Natalie Goggans in fifth singles and the Royals added a forfeit win in sixth singles.

Scranton is back in action on Friday afternoon against Hamline at 2:30 p.m.
