HUNTINGDON, Pa. – The University of Scranton men's lacrosse team (3-6, 1-0 Landmark) scored seven goals apiece in three of the four quarters and cruised to a 21-2 victory over the Juniata College Eagles (2-7, 0-1 Landmark) in the conference opener for both teams on Saturday afternoon at Gibbel Stadium in Huntingdon.
The 21 goals mark a season-high for the Royals and the most since scoring 24 in a victory over Drew on Apr. 12, 2023.
Sophomore Quinn Carson (Ardmore, Pa./Haverford) opened the scoring just 2:27 into the game and senior Matthew McAree (Manhasset, N.Y./Manhasset) struck just over two minutes later off a feed from classmate Alex Eglitis (Randolph, N.J./Randolph) for an early 2-0 lead. Over the remainder of the quarter, sophomore Kyle Holmes (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) and freshman Myles McCutcheon (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood) added two goals apiece as Scranton opened up a 7-0 lead. Juniata got on the board in the first minute of the second quarter, but McAree answered less than a minute later and McCutcheon tallied three more goals in the next nine plus minutes as the Royals took a 14-1 advantage into halftime.
Neither team scored in the third quarter, but Scranton then scored seven more times in the fourth period including a pair of goals from freshman Tommy Tremarco (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) to help secure the dominant victory.
McCutcheon scored a career-high five goals and also added an assist in the victory, while Holmes tallied four points on three goals and a helper. McAree and Tremarco recorded two goals apiece for Scranton.
Junior John O'Connor (Rocky Point, N.Y./Rocky Point) went an impressive 14-of-16 on faceoffs and collected nine ground balls to go along with four ground balls and three caused turnovers from Holmes.
In goal for the Royals, sophomore Declan Allen (Garden City, N.Y./Millbrook) made four saves over the first 30 minutes of action and four different goalies saw time in the second half including junior Sam Oross (Scotch Plains, N.J./Scotch Plains-Fanwood) who tallied three saves.
Scranton returns to action on Thursday night at Goucher for a Landmark Conference battle that will get underway at 7 p.m.
