MADISON, N.J. – Three different players scored four goals apiece and The University of Scranton men's lacrosse team (7-6, 5-0 Landmark) used a balanced attack to remain unbeaten in Landmark Conference play with a 17-6 victory over the Drew Rangers (6-7, 1-4 Landmark) on Wednesday night at Ranger Stadium in Madison.
Freshman Myles McCutcheon (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood) struck just 1:14 into the game and the Royals scored six of the first seven goals in the contest to take a 6-1 lead after one. McCutcheon and senior Matthew McAree (Manhasset, N.Y./Manhasset) each scored twice in the first period and the former then completed the hat trick just 0:43 into the second which opened up a 7-1 advantage. From there, McAree finished off his own hat trick at the 9:18 mark of the quarter and sophomore Kyle Holmes (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) scored with 1:22 left to give Scranton an 11-3 lead at the break.
Holmes added two more goals in the third quarter to become the third member of the team to record a hat trick in the contest and Drew never got closer than eight in the second half as the Royals preserved the dominant victory.
For the Royals, Holmes, McAree and McCutcheon all scored four goals apiece and a total of eight players scored in the victory. McCutcheon added a career-best four assists and he has now scored multiple goals in six straight games.
Junior John O'Connor (Rocky Point, N.Y./Rocky Point) went 14-of-21 on faceoffs and collected a team-high seven ground balls, while graduate student Colin Pierce (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) added five ground balls and two caused turnovers. Freshman Connor Cole (South Huntington, N.Y./St. Anthony's) added three caused turnovers of his own.
In goal for Scranton, sophomore Declan Allen (Garden City, N.Y./Millbrook) made nine saves.
The Royals will head to Elizabethtown on Saturday afternoon for a rematch of the 2023 Landmark title game with action slated to get underway at 1 p.m. Both teams will enter the contest unbeaten in conference play thus far.
