Rushmore, Van Loan Lead Men's Soccer to Landmark Conference Opener Victory Over Elizabethtown, 1-0

SCRANTON, PA – The University of Scranton men's soccer team earned a 1-0 victory against Elizabethtown in their first Landmark Conference match-up of the season on Saturday afternoon at Weiss Field. 

The Basics

  • Final Score: Scranton 1, ETown 0 
  • Records: Scranton (4-2-2, 1-0-0 LC); ETown (2-5-2, 0-1-0 LC)

How it Happened

  • ETown threatened with a shot on goal in the 22nd minute, but sophomore goalkeeper Ned Van Loan was up to the task, making the save. The Blue Jays took two more shots on goal in the half, but Van Loan made both saves, keeping the game at a scoreless tie.
  • After a quiet first half with just one shot on goal, the Royals broke the ice on a corner kick in the 35th minute of the game. After the initial kick was sent to the top of the box, junior Justin Curran played it back in toward the mouth of the goal, and junior Preston Rushmore used his heal to flick the ball into the bottom left corner of the net to put the Royals up 1-0.
  • In the 74th minute, the Blue Jays took two shots looking for the equalizer, but the first was wide off the foot of Jude Ashley, and the second shot from Jayden Morris was saved by Van Loan. 

Top Performers

  • Van Loan made a career-high four saves in the contest, earning both his first career win and first career shutout.
  • Rushmore scored the game-winning goal, his first goal as a Royal.
