Shaw Carries Field Hockey Past Arcadia in Overtime, 2-1

SCRANTON, Pa. – Junior Annie Shaw (Exton, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) scored the game-winning goal in the first overtime period and The University of Scranton field hockey team (2-1) topped the Arcadia Knights (2-2) by a score of 2-1 on Saturday afternoon at Weiss Field in Scranton.

Shaw gathered the ball in the Royals' half of the field and dribbled down the sideline before sending a shot to the far post for her second goal of the game and the game-winner.

This marks the Royals' ninth straight victory over the Knights dating back to the 2015 season with seven of the nine meetings decided by one goal.

Shaw opened the scoring in the eighth minute as she took a feed across the circle from graduate student Katie Redding (Havertown, Pa./Haverford) and found the back of the cage for an early 1-0 lead. However, Arcadia was able to tie the game in the final seconds of the first quarter and Morganne Dee backhanded a shot home to even things at one. Both teams battled through much of the second quarter and Scranton saw a pair of penalty corner opportunities, but the game remained deadlocked at one at halftime.

Senior goalie Gianna Travia (Havertown, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) denied the Knights' Mackenzie Clark with a shot in the 42nd minute and the Royals had two chances in the final minute of the quarter as the score remained tied at one at the end of three. Both teams had a handful of chances in the fourth quarter with two penalty corners apiece, but the game headed to overtime.

After a penalty corner for Arcadia in the 65th minute, Shaw scored the game-winner just 0:19 later to notch her second career multi-goal game. The Exton, Pa., native had previously scored two in a victory versus Lycoming on Oct. 25, 2023.

The Royals held a 15-4 advantage in shots led by four apiece from Redding, Shaw and senior Reagan Dolan (Broomall, Pa./Bonner & Prendergast) while Travia made one save in the victory.

Scranton will host Keystone on Monday night at Weiss Field with action slated to get underway at 7 p.m.
