Scranton Field Hockey Takes Down Elizabethtown, 3-1

ELIZABETHTOWN, PA -- The University of Scranton field hockey team remained unbeaten in Landmark Conference play with a strong 3-1 victory over Elizabethtown College Saturday afternoon at Wolf Field.

The Basics 

  • Final Score: Scranton 3, Elizabethtown 1 
  • Records: Scranton (10-3, 4-0 Landmark), Elizabethtown (4-9, 1-3 Landmark) 

How it Happened  

  • The Royals jumped on the Blue Jays defense early, as Maggie Keys dribbled through the Elizabethtown defense and fired a shot into the back of the cage just 1:19 into the game to give Scranton an early 1-0 advantage.
  • Scranton kept up the pressure early, tallying seven corners in the first quarter, however the Royals were unable to score again in the period.
  • Goalie MacLean Thuermer and the Royal's defense kept Scranton in front heading into halftime. The senior keeper tallied seven saves in the half to hold the Elizabethtown offense scoreless for the first 30 minutes of the contest.
  • The Blue Jays finally broke through in the second half, finding the back of the cage to tie the game just 1:34 into the third. After the goal, neither team recorded a shot for the rest of the quarter.
  • Scranton retook the lead in the fourth minute of the fourth quarter when Annie Shaw carried the ball toward the circle and sent a crosser toward the cage that Shana Goldsmith eventually controlled and then scored to give Scranton a 2-1 lead. 
  • The Royals added on with 6:40 left in the game to take a 3-1 advantage. After the first two shots on the team's 13th corner attempt of the day were saved, Olivia Dougherty fired a shot and scored to add an insurance goal for Scranton.
Top Performers  
  • Thuermer recorded seven saves in the win.
  • Dougherty scored her fourth goal of the season.
  • Goldsmith tallied her seventh goal this year.

  • Scranton held an 18-10 advantage in shots and a 16-8 edge in shots on goal.  
  • The Royals had 13 corner attempts and Elizabethtown had five.
