HOBOKEN, N.J. — The University of Scranton women's volleyball team dropped a road doubleheader on Saturday, falling to No. 15 Washington & Lee, 3-1, and Stevens Institute of Technology, 3-1, at Canavan Arena.
Match #1 (L, 1-3 vs No. 15 Washington & Lee)
The Royals battled No. 15 Washington & Lee, but fell in four sets in their first match of the day (19-25, 25-22, 11-25, 16-25).
Deanna Whelpley led Scranton with 14 kills and added 3 digs, while Adria Vargas added 9 kills and 1 block. Cammi Quirk led the team with 31 assists and added 18 digs, and Camryn Hoffman led the Royals with 19 digs and added 4 assists.
After dropping the first set, Scranton won a hard fought second set (25-22), although the Generals responded, using a .308 hitting percentage to win the third set (11-25) and a .359 hitting percentage to win the fourth set (16-25).
Match #2 (L, 1-3 vs Stevens)
Scranton dropped its second match of the day to Stevens Institute of Technology, 1-3 (15-25, 25-19, 20-25, 18-25)
Whelpley powered the offense with 14 kills, and Lauren Angelucci put forward a strong effort with 12 kills of her own. Quirk directed the attack, dishing out 37 assists. Hoffman led the team with 17 digs and 3 aces, while Maddie Forry tallied 14 digs as well.
After falling to the Ducks in the first set, the Royals responded with a strong 25-19 win in set two with 14 total kills and 7 blocks. Scranton battled in the third set, coming back from a five point deficit to take leads of 13-9 and 15-11, but the Royals were unable to close it out as the Ducks won nine of the next 11 points to win the set. Stevens started set four strong, and although the Royals battled back from a 6-13 deficit to get within two points at 12-14, Stevens was able to stay in front and close out the match victory.
The Royals are back in action next Tuesday, October 14, at home in The John Long Center, where they'll face Drew University at 7:00 p.m.
