ITHACA, N.Y. — The University of Scranton men's swimming & diving team earned three event victories and multiple top finishes on Saturday at the Kelsey Partridge Bird Natatorium, competing in a tri-meet against host Ithaca College and Hartwick College.
Scranton defeated Hartwick 206-93, but fell to host Ithaca by a score of 206-88.
Senior Jimmy O'Malley, freshman Jake Brunetti, and senior Matt Sherry each captured individual wins to lead the Royals in a strong early-season showing.
O'Malley posted a dominant performance in the 1,000-yard freestyle, winning in 10:18.29—more than seven seconds ahead of the next finisher. He later added a second place finish in the 500 free (5:00.46) and a fourth-place finish in the 200 butterfly (2:03.67).
Brunetti picked up a victory in the 200-yard backstroke, touching the wall in 1:59.23 to edge Ithaca's Marshall Adams by just two-tenths of a second. The freshman standout also earned a second place finish in the 200 free at 1:47.59. Earlier in the day, he helped the 200-yard medley relay team of Conor Doogan, Matt Sherry, and Owen Sherry secure second place in 1:36.82.
Matt Sherry delivered another win for Scranton with a standout performance in the 100-yard butterfly, posting a time of 51.82 to take first.
Sophomore Craig Clarke added a second-place finish in the 200 individual medley (2:02.54), while juniors Samuel Peters and Matt Bellach went fourth and fifth in the 100 breaststroke (1:01.79 and 1:01.89) and earned additional points in the 200 breast. Freshman Owen Sherry led the sprint freestylers with a third-place finish in the 50 free (22.01), followed by Zach Leonard (22.65) and KJ Smith (23.13).
On the boards, junior Tim Hause impressed with runner-up finishes on both the one-meter and three-meter dives, scoring 193.70 and 160.80, respectively.
Scranton returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 25, traveling to Washington, D.C. to face Catholic University.
