Scranton Women's Volleyball Splits Saturday Doubleheader

SCRANTON, PA — The University of Scranton women's volleyball team split a home doubleheader on Saturday, taking No. 6 Juniata to five sets before falling 3-2, and bouncing back with a dominant 3-0 sweep over Marymount University in the nightcap at the John Long Center.


Match #1 (L, 2-3 vs No. 6 Juniata)

The Royals took nationally ranked No. 6 Juniata to the limit in a five-set thriller (18-25, 25-22, 19-25, 25-23, 7-15), battling point-for-point in one of their strongest showings of the season.

Adria Vargas led Scranton with 14 kills and 10 digs, while Deanna Whelpley added 8 kills and a team-high 5 blocks. Cammi Quirk tallied 35 assists and 11 digs, and Camryn Hoffman chipped in with 12 digs and 3 service aces.

Scranton used a .333 hitting percentage to win the second set and rallied again in the fourth with a .257 mark to force a fifth. Juniata closed out the match with a .435 hitting percentage in the final frame.

The Royals totaled 10 blocks, 8 aces, and 55 digs in a performance that highlighted their ability to compete with one of the top teams in the country.


Match #2 (W, 3-0 vs Marymount)

Scranton responded with a convincing sweep of Marymount University (26-24, 25-15, 25-14) to cap off the day on a high note.

Whelpley powered the offense with 18 kills on .400 hitting, and Vargas added 8 kills along with a career-best 7 service aces. Quirk directed the attack with 36 assists and led the team with 8 digs. Hoffman added 7 digs and 3 more aces.

After edging out the Saints in a tight first set, the Royals rolled through the second and third, hitting .385 and .458, respectively. Scranton finished with a .323 hitting percentage overall and a season-high 15 aces.

The Royals (12-6, 1-1 Landmark) are back in action next Saturday, October 11, in Hoboken, N.J., where they'll face Washington and Lee University at 1:00 p.m., followed by a matchup against host Stevens Institute of Technology at 3:00 p.m.
