No. 2 Scranton Women's Basketball Cruises Past No. 22 Geneseo in Season Opener, 60-35

GENESEO, NY -- The University of Scranton women's basketball team took down No. 22 Geneseo, 60-35, in the team's season opener Friday night at the Carl Schrader Gymnasium in Geneseo. 

The Basics

How it Happened

  • Geneseo started off the night with a strong run, grabbing two seven-point leads at 9-2 and 11-4 in the first 11:32 of the game. Scranton's points in that span came from a pair of layups by junior Katie Gorski.
  • With 3:06 left in the first quarter, buckets by junior Elizabeth Bennett and freshman Kaitlyn Raguso got the Royals within three.
  • Trailing 12-8 to begin the second quarter, the Royals' offense exploded in the period with a 22-7 run to take a 30-19 lead into halftime. Freshman Sophia Talutto tallied seven points, two steals and one three pointer in the quarter.
  • The Knights battled in the third quarter, pulling within six points with seven minutes to play in the period, but Scranton continued to outpace them, taking a 14-point lead into the fourth quarter.
  • Senior Kaci Kranson led the way for the Royals' offense in the fourth quarter, scoring eight points in the final 10 minutes of the game as Scranton outscored the Knights 18-7 in the fourth to win 60-35.

Top Performers

  • Gorski filled up the stat sheet, recording a team-high 17 points and eight rebounds, while also adding four steals and one assist.
  • Kranson added 13 points and grabbed six boards.
  • Senior Jenna Sloan tallied four rebounds, four assists and three blocks.
