Men's Lacrosse Loses 17-7 on the Road Against No. 6 Christopher Newport

NEWPORT NEWS, VA. - The University of Scranton men's lacrosse team fell 17-7 to No. 6 Christopher Newport University on Sunday afternoon in Newport News, VA.

The Basics:

  • Final Score: No. 6 Christopher Newport – 17, Scranton – 7
  • Records: No. 6 Christopher Newport (5-0), Scranton (0-4)

How it Happened:

  • Christopher Newport got the scoring started with a pair of unassisted goals, taking a 2-0 lead at the 12:52 mark in the first quarter.
  • Sophomore goalie Carsen Kirchner kept the Captains' lead at two after making three saves before the Royals' offense countered at the 8:57 mark as junior Jason Kozak scored his third goal of the year to get Scranton on the board.
  • The Captains responded with three straight goals in a 2:33 span to extend their lead to 4-1 with 5:16 to play in the first.
  • Kozak took a feed from junior Quinn Carson and scored his second goal of the game, however Christopher Newport answered quickly with a face off win and quick score just 21 seconds later.
  • Junior Kyle Holmes cut the deficit back to three goals after scoring his first goal of the game with just 14 seconds left in the quarter.
  • Trailing 6-3, the Royals offense kept the pressure on Christopher Newport's defense with six shots in the first 2:29 of the second quarter, but Captains' goalie Mason Bellinger was up to the task, keeping Scranton off the board for the time being. 
  • The Captains, on their first offensive possession of the second, cashed in and extended their lead to 7-3 with 11:59 to go in the period.
  • Scranton promptly responded with a goal of their own as sophomore Tommy Tremarco took the ball from behind the net and got enough space to rip one past Bellinger for his first goal of the season.
  • Christopher Newport's offense exploded in the last five minutes of the quarter as it scored three more times, taking a 10-4 lead into halftime.
  • The Captains scored early in the third period, but Scranton answered quickly as Kozak scored an unassisted goal to cut the deficit back to six.
  • Both teams traded goals again, first Christopher Newport's Matt McCabe scored his first of the year and then sophomore Myles McCutcheon got on the board with his first goal of the afternoon to answer for Scranton.
  • Although Kirchner made seven saves in the final seven minutes of the third, the Captains found the back of the net three times and took a 14-6 lead into the fourth quarter.
  • Christopher Newport opened the scoring in the third quarter with a goal at the 13:45 mark, and it added another goal 1:33 later, extending their advantage to 16-6.
  • Kozak scored his second goal, assisted by sophomore Patrick D'Amaro, at the 6:15 mark, but the Captains responded 39 seconds later to keep the Christopher Newport lead at 10 goals. 
  • The Captains' defense was able to keep Scranton off the board in the last few minutes, closing out a 17-7 victory.

Top Performers:

  • Kozak led the Royals with a career-high four goals.
  • Kirchner made 16 saves in the game. The sophomore has now tallied double digit saves in each of the Royals' first four games this year.

Inside the Box Score:
