Second Half Surge Pushes Men's Lacrosse Past Susquehanna, 17-11

SELINSGROVE, PA. - The University of Scranton men's lacrosse team won its second straight Landmark Conference game as the Royals took down Susquehanna University, 17-11, on Wednesday afternoon in Selinsgrove, Pa.

The Basics:

  • Final Score: Scranton – 17, Susquehanna – 11
  • Records: Scranton (2-8, 2-0 Landmark), Susquehanna (8-2, 1-1 Landmark)

How it Happened:

  • Susquehanna jumped out to an early 1-0 lead at the 12:36 mark of the first quarter, but junior Pat McCormack responded for Scranton, taking a pass from senior Aidan Richter and scoring to tie the game at 1-1.
  • The River Hawks answered by scoring a pair of goals separated by just 31 seconds to go in front 3-1.
  • At exactly the 8:00 mark, junior Quinn Carson found the back of the net and then sophomore Tommy Tremarco scored a goal 1:56 later to tie the game at three apiece.
  • Susquehanna capitalized with a man up goal at the 5:06 point in the first, but once again, Scranton answered as McCormack tallied his second score of the game to tie it up, 4-4.
  • Sophomore Brendan Donohue gave the Royals their first lead of the game with a goal with just 50 seconds left to go in the period.
  • With 11:01 to go in the second quarter, junior Kyle Holmes found classmate Jason Kozak who extended the lead to 6-4.
  • The River Hawks scored their fifth goal of the game at the 9:36 mark to get within one, but Scranton responded 40 seconds later when Carson scored his second of the day.
  • Susquehanna scored a goal at the 1:12 mark to get within one goal and scored another 40 seconds after that to tie the game at 7-7, but that didn't last long as Donohue put Scranton back in the lead with a goal with just three seconds left in the half.
  • Donohue started the third quarter the same way he ended the second, scoring a goal just 41 seconds after the break. Susquehanna responded, however, with a goal at the 12:52 mark to cut the Royals' lead down to 9-8.
  • After Scranton went back ahead by two at the 11:10 mark when Holmes scored, the River Hawks responded less than two minutes later to make it 10-9.
  • The Royals ended the third quarter scoring three straight goals from sophomore Myles McCutcheon, Donohue and Carson as they took a 13-9 lead into the fourth.
  • Although Susquehanna scored a goal 1:03 into the fourth to make it 13-10, Scranton stayed hot, scoring four goals in a row to extend the lead to 17-10. 
  • The River Hawks got one more goal at the 1:14 mark, but it was too little too late as Scranton held on to defeat Susquehanna, 17-11.

Top Performers:

  • Donohue scored a career-high four goals.
  • Carson led the team with five points on three goals and two assists.
  • Junior goalie Carsen Kirchner made 10 saves in the victory.

Inside the Box Score:

  • Scranton out shot Susquehanna 54-40.
  • The Royals won 23 face offs, while the River Hawks won nine.
  • Susquehanna tallied eight caused turnovers and Scranton recorded six.
