The University of Scranton men's lacrosse team has named senior goalie Carsen Kirchner team captain for the 2027 season, Royals Head Coach Michael Hofmeister announced today.
Kirchner enters his final season as one of the most decorated goalies in program history. Last spring, he earned USILA Honorable Mention All-American and All-Landmark Conference First Team honors, and he was a key part of Scranton's run to the Landmark Conference title and the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The year before, he set a single-season program record for saves and earned All-Landmark First Team recognition for the first time.
"Carsen has the unique ability to be relatable to each of his teammates. His growth throughout his career is a big reason for this ability. And that skill, combined with his work ethic on & off the field, and natural talent he possesses as a lacrosse player, will allow him to excel in this role for our program, and I'm excited to work with him in it," said Hofmeister.
Kirchner leads a group that returns a wealth of All-Landmark Conference talent. Colin Giarrusso, the Landmark Defensive Player of the Year, headlines the group as a two-time First Team short stick midfielder. He is joined by First Team selections Connor Cole (defense) and Thomas Popolizio (long stick midfield). Logan Kelly (defense) and Shawn Martin (faceoff) earned Second Team honors, and Brendan Donohue (midfield) received Honorable Mention.
The roster includes 32 seniors and juniors, a depth of experience the coaching staff believes will shape the team's culture this season.
"We have set lofty goals again this year. With a lot of returners, especially upperclassmen on this year's team, we are in a great place as a program with many individuals sharing in a leadership role with serving our program and holding everyone on our team to our high standard. Every player is putting in the work to improve daily and to help lift this program to new heights, as we compete against ourselves each day to be the best team in the country," Hofmeister said.
