Reich Reaches 200 Career Points as Women’s Lacrosse Dominates Catholic, 19-6

SCRANTON, PA – The University of Scranton women's lacrosse team dismantled the Catholic University Cardinals, defeating them 19-6 on Saturday afternoon at Weiss Field in Scranton.

The Basics

  • This win marks the fourth straight win against Catholic for Scranton dating back to the Landmark Conference Title game in 2023.

How it Happened

  • Scranton got the scoring started at the 12:30 mark in the first quarter when senior Catherine McGlynn connected with sophomore Jillian Lopez who caught the pass in traffic and buried the shot to put Scranton ahead 1-0.
  • The Cardinals responded with back-to-back, free position goals just one minute apart to put Catholic ahead 2-1 with 9:36 left in the first.
  • Just 1:21 after the Cardinals took their first lead of the day, graduate student Erin Reich responded with her first goal of the game, slipping one under the goalie from in front of the crease to tie the game at 2-2.
  • Senior Grace Lane scored on a free position attempt with just 33 seconds to go in the quarter, giving Scranton a lead that the Royals never gave up again at 3-2.
  • At the 14:09 mark of the second quarter, sophomore Eileen Hewitt fired an off-balance shot and scored to make it 4-2 Scranton.
  • Catholic's freshman Henley Bredemann scored her first goal of the game at the 12:47 mark of the second quarter to bring the Cards within one goal at 4-3, but the Royals responded with seven goals to end the quarter.
  • Lane found Hewitt in traffic who flicked the shot into the top left corner of the net to make it 5-3 Scranton. Then Lane, at the 5:33 mark of the second quarter, took it herself to goal and scored her second of the day.
  • Just 30 seconds after the Lane goal extended the lead to 6-3 for Scranton, Hewitt found Molly McCarren on the doorstep of the goal and the senior scored her first of the day, making it 7-3 Scranton. 
  • Reich then scored her second goal of the afternoon 30 seconds later, ripping a shot from the top of the eight-meter fan for her 200th career point.
  • Scranton scored two more times on free-position goals by Lane and senior Shannon DiDominica to extend the advantage to 10-3. Lane added one more goal with 2:22 to give the Royals a nine-goal lead at halftime.
  • Reich scored her third goal of the game and the 150th of her career to open the scoring in the third quarter, but Catholic responded two minutes later with a goal of their own to cut the Scranton lead to 12-4.
  • With 3:03 left to go in the second, Reich took a feed from Hewitt and fired a shot from deep to score the 13th goal of the game for Scranton. Reich scored again 1:15 later, assisted by Lane, to put the Royals ahead by 10.
  • Tanajewski scored her first goal of the game with nine seconds left in the third period, bouncing the shot into the net and giving the Royals their biggest advantage of the game at 15-4.
  • Freshman Grace DiDominica began the scoring for the Royals in the fourth quarter, getting on the score sheet with her first of the game, assisted by Hewitt, just 1:45 into the fourth. 
  • Catholic responded at the 10:47 mark with its fifth goal of the game, but Hewitt found Grace DiDominica again who scored for a second time to make it 17-5 Scranton. McCarren scored her second of the game at the 6:23 mark, and McGlynn scored her first goal of the day with 3:45 to play.
  • The Cardinals scored a free-position goal with 50 seconds left in the game, but it was too little too late as Scranton defeated Catholic 19-6.

Top Performers

  • Reich tallied a team-high of five goals. The graduate student reached 200 career points and 150 career goals in the win.
  • Lane had six points on four goals and two assists.
  • Hewitt led the team with four assists while also tallying two goals, four ground balls and two caused turnovers.
  • Tanajewski led the team with four caused turnovers and five ground balls, while also adding one goal and three assists.
  • The Royals' defense limited Catholic to just 16 shots, a season-low for the Cardinals.
