Scranton Women's Lacrosse Defeats Susquehanna 13-4 to Advance to Tenth Straight Championship

The University of Scranton women's lacrosse team cruised to a 13-4 victory over Susquehanna University at Weiss Field on Wednesday evening to advance to the Landmark Title game for the 10th straight season. 

The Basics 

  • Final Score: Scranton – 13, Susquehanna – 4 
  • Records: Scranton (14-4, 9-0 Landmark); Susquehanna (10-9, 6-3 Landmark) 
  • Scranton will look to become the second school in Landmark Conference history to win four straight titles in women's lacrosse this Saturday. 
How it Happened
  • Scranton raced out to a fast start, netting the first seven goals of the game. Jillian Lopez opened the scoring 1:30 into the first quarter, and just 25 seconds later Alexandra Back finished a feed from Grace DiDominica to make it 2-0 Royals. 
  • Allyson Flynn set up Eileen Hewitt for a goal at the 11:11 mark of the opening period, and Lopez added her second of the night 42 seconds later to extend the lead to 4-0. 
  • Susquehanna goalkeeper Aerin O'Brien kept the Royals off the board with six straight saves, but Lopez broke through with 39 seconds left in the quarter, completing a hat trick and pushing the advantage to 5-0. 
  • Hewitt opened the second quarter with an unassisted tally 2:10 into the frame, and Lopez followed with her fourth goal just 1:07 later as Scranton built a 7-0 cushion. 
  • Abby DiComes finished a feed from Jessica Russo with 4:43 remaining in the half to put Susquehanna on the board, sending Scranton into the break with a six-goal lead. 
  • Makaela Larkin converted a free-position chance to pull the River Hawks within five, but Colleen Mullin responded 37 seconds later to restore the six-goal edge. With 10:01 left in the third, Hewitt found Lopez for her fifth goal of the night, and Jessica McCabe added a free-position goal at the 3:31 mark to give the Royals a 10-2 lead heading into the fourth. 
  • Sophia Trively scored on a free-position attempt 44 seconds into the final quarter, but Scranton answered with back-to-back goals from Flynn and DiDominica just 57 seconds apart to extend the lead to 12-3 with 11:57 left in the game. 
  • Natalie Paul added a free-position goal with 8:28 remaining to push the advantage to 10.  
  • Ruby Calabrese scored a player-up goal with 2:27 left for Susquehanna, but Scranton closed out a 13-4 victory to advance to the championship game. 
Top Performers
  • Jillian Lopez led the way with five goals and added three ground balls, two caused turnovers and a team-best four draw controls. 
  • Eileen Hewitt paced the way with three assists, six ground balls, and four caused turnovers while also adding two goals and three draw controls. 
  • Leah Smith and Mia Dinnocenzio delivered strong defensive performances, each recording four ground balls and three caused turnovers. 
  • Eva Guerino made three saves on five shots faced in the win.

  • Scranton will host the Landmark Conference Championship game at home at Weiss Field on Saturday, with the opening draw set for 3:30 p.m. in Scranton.
