The University of Scranton men's golf team turned in a historic performance Tuesday afternoon, blasting a program record score of 276 to win a tri-match at Wyoming Valley Country Club.

The Royals shattered the previous record of 287, set in 2014, by 11 strokes. Scranton ran away with the team title, well ahead of Lycoming, which finished second at 315, and King's, which took third at 324.

Richard Essen and Marshall Kain led the charge, tying for medalist honors with matching 3 under par 68s, rounds that now stand tied for the second lowest in program history. Essen rolled in four birdies on his way to the low score. Kain caught fire down the stretch, playing the back nine in a scorching 5 under par 31 with an eagle on the par 5 11th and four more birdies.

Cade Kelleher was right on their heels, firing a 2 under par 69 that included an eagle on the par 5 first hole and five birdies for the round. Joey Dell added a steady even par 71 with three birdies, and Jake Lairdieson closed out the lineup with a 72, also featuring three birdies.

The Royals will look to keep the momentum going Thursday, Oct. 1, when they host King's College at Glen Oak Country Club.
