The University of Scranton women's volleyball team split their final two matches of the Electric City Invitational Saturday afternoon at the John Long Center. The Royals dropped the first game to Washington & Lee, then won a five-set thriller over Shenandoah.
Game 1 vs. Washington & Lee
The Basics

How It Happened
First Set
- Washington & Lee took control early in the set, taking a 7-3 lead.
- The Royals climbed back to a one-point deficit, as Sophomore Adria Vargas contributed two kills, and Freshmen Kasia Burda and Angela Bush one each.
- Tied at 16, the Royals went on an 8-0 run to take a 23-16 lead.
- Freshman Andie Fortmeyer delivered the final two kills of the set, as the Royals took the first 25-18
Second Set
- The Royals and Generals traded points for most of the second set, until W&L went on a 7-1 run to take a 21-14 lead.
- A service ace from Freshman Audrey Hibbard, kill from classmate Kasia Burda, and a forced General error brought the Royals within five.
- Scranton was unable to capitalize on the momentum, ultimately dropping the second set, 19-25.
Third Set
- The Generals jumped out to a 4-1 lead, but the Royals tied the game thanks to kills from Vargas and Fortmeyer, and a service ace from Senior Lexi Brown.
- Washington & Lee scored five straight points as the Generals took a 15-8 lead.
- Bush scored back-to-back kills to bring the Royals within two, down 19-21.
- The Royals fought on a long point that ended with a kill from Junior Danielle Kramer, but dropped the second set 20-25.
Fourth Set
- Krammer delivered a block early in the fourth set to give the Royals a 2-0 lead.
- Tied at 12-12, Burda delivered a kill to regain Scranton's control.
- The Generals took an 18-14 advantage, but the Royals fought back to tie the game at 18 apiece.
- Scranton was unable to counter a 7-2 run by the Generals, as the Royals dropped the final set 20-25.

How It Happened
First Set
- The Hornets and Royals traded points early in the first set, until a kill from Bush and an ace from Quirk gave the Royals an 8-6 edge.
- Tied at 11-11, Quirk made a diving play to keep the point alive, and Vargas connected at the net to get the kill.
- Kramer scored three kills to spark a 6-2 run for the Royals as they gained set-point, 24-17.
- Fortmeyer finished the set with a kill, and Scranton jumped out to a 1-0 lead.
Second Set
- Shenandoah started the set with a 3-1 lead, but the Royals regained momentum after a Vargas service ace to take a 5-3 advantage.
- Both teams traded points for a majority of the set, but the Hornets pulled away in the middle of the set, up 17-11.
- Down 21-16, Bush delivered an electrifying kill as the Royals fought to stay in the game.
- Scranton came within two, 23-21, but ultimately dropped the set to the Hornets, 21-25.
Third Set
- In the third set, Bush found the opposite side of the court, sneaking past a Hornet defender to give the Royals a 3-1 lead.
- Burda and Kramer teamed up at the net for an assisted block, and Bush added another kill as the Royals took a 9-3 advantage.
- A four-point Hornet run brought them back into the game, as the game tied at 16-16.
- Fortmeyer and Burda met a Hornet attacker at the net to deliver a block that gave Scranton the momentum and a 22-19 lead.
- Vargas contributed two timely kills as the Royals reversed the second-set score to take the third, 25-21.
Fourth Set
- Royal errors allowed the Hornets to take an early 3-0 lead.
- Shenandoah carried the momentum for much of the fourth set, building a 17-9 lead.
- The Royals fought back to get within six, down 19-13, thanks to kills from Bush, Burda and Fortmeyer.
- Scranton surged at the end of the set, fighting off match point for four straight points, and tying the game at 24-24.
- The Hornets were able to withstand Scranton's comeback, forcing a decisive set.
Fifth Set
- In a highly contested fifth set, tied at 5 apiece, Vargas and Bush delivered back-to-back kills to give Scranton a 10-7 lead.
- Burda delivered a game-point kill, and Quirk brought it home as the Royals won the set and match, 15-11
